How long does a house cleaning take?

A regular cleaning of a mid-size home takes about two to three hours with two people. A deep clean takes four to six, and a move-out clean four to seven. Size sets the starting point. What stretches a visit is the number of bathrooms, the time since the last professional clean, and what’s in the way when the cleaners arrive.

How long does each type of cleaning take?

For a home of 2,000 to 3,500 sq ft cleaned by a pair of cleaning professionals, these are the usual times on site, with what each one costs for a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath house in average shape:

Type of cleaningUsual time on siteThree-bedroom house, average condition
Regular visit (weekly, every two weeks or monthly)2 to 3 hours$115 to $150 every two weeks
Deep clean4 to 6 hours$240 to $310
Move-in or move-out clean, empty home4 to 7 hours$315 to $400

Smaller homes and condos come in under those ranges. A large house is a different job, and the time grows with it: a deep clean of a five-bedroom home with four and a half baths, a family room and an office runs $545 to $660.

What makes a house cleaning take longer?

Condition first, then bathrooms. Buildup that has had months to set takes longer to lift than two weeks of it, and every bathroom adds real time, because tubs, showers, toilets and grout can’t be rushed.

The things that stretch a visit, in roughly the order they matter:

  • Time since the last professional clean. Soap film, grease on cabinet fronts and dust on baseboards build up slowly, and come off slowly.
  • Bathrooms. Small rooms, slow work: tubs, shower glass, toilets and grout.
  • Kitchen use. A stove used every night needs more work than one used twice a week.
  • Pets. Hair on stairs, in corners and along baseboards takes extra passes.
  • Clutter on surfaces. Cleaners work around what’s on a counter or a dresser; they can’t clean under it if it’s covered.
  • A finished basement. It’s a whole floor, and it’s the one most often left out when people describe their home.

Why does the first visit take longer?

Because for most homes, the first visit is a deep clean. It catches up on the baseboards, door frames, vents and built-up grime that regular visits don’t touch, which roughly doubles the time on site.

After that, regular visits only deal with what built up since the last one, so they’re shorter and cost less. If your home was professionally cleaned recently and is already in good shape, the first visit can be a regular one. Deep clean or recurring cleaning: which one first? covers how to tell.

How much is a three-hour house cleaning?

We price by the home, not by the hour, so the same house costs the same whether the visit runs a little shorter or a little longer. A three-hour visit is typical of a regular cleaning of a mid-size home, which for a three-bedroom house cleaned every two weeks runs $115 to $150 per visit.

Pricing by the house protects both sides. You know the number before anyone arrives, and nobody is watching the clock while they work. If the house needs more than a regular visit can handle, that shows up in the price range before the visit, not on the bill after it.

How can you make a cleaning go faster?

Clear the surfaces you want cleaned and tell your cleaners what matters most. Ten minutes of picking up before they arrive turns into more of the visit going to actual cleaning.

  • Pick up the floors and counters. Toys, laundry, mail and dishes in the sink are the biggest time sinks.
  • Put pets somewhere comfortable. A dog that wants to help adds time and stress for everyone.
  • Name your priorities. If the kitchen and the primary bath matter most, say so on the first visit.
  • Keep the same day of the week. You’ll have the same two cleaning professionals every visit, and a pair that knows your home works faster each time. Moving your regular day is the one thing that can change who comes.

How often should a house be cleaned to keep visits short?

Every two weeks keeps most homes in the two-to-three-hour range. Monthly visits run longer and cost a little more each time, because a month of buildup takes longer to clear.
